If there are stones in the bile duct, they are usually removed at the same operation laparoscopically. Occasionally they are unable to be removed laparoscopically. If this is the case Dr Allison may involve a gastroenterologist in your care after the operation to attempt to remove them via ERCP (endoscopic retrogradecholangiopancreatograpy). This is performed via a telescope down the mouth, into the small intestine and up the common bile duct. Rarely an open operation is required to address large, obstructing bile stones.
